AvH at Student Debate Competitions

We couldn’t be more excited to share news about how our debaters performed at the provincial debate championships on the weekend of February 12, 2022. After two prepared rounds on the topic of prison abolition vs. prison reform and three impromptu rounds, here’s the rundown:

  • Karl H.: personal best score
  • Rose K.: personal best score
  • Jessica L.: personal best score
  • Daniel L.: tied personal best score, 4th overall in individual rankings
  • Thomas C.-M. & Daniel L.: rank 4th in Quebec teams, advance to national championships

They put in a great deal of preparation for the tourney, so be sure to give them a (socially distanced) high five, or its verbal equivalent when you see them!

AvH would like to congratulate Thomas C.-M. and Daniel L. on a strong performance in the Canadian National British Parliamentary Championships hosted online by the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association on the weekend of January 8, 2022.

While our team did not advance to the quarter finals, they debated admirably in six rounds of impromptu debate on topics ranging from illegally obtained police evidence, to US Supreme Court appointments, to first contact with extraterrestrials (better known to all the Trekkies out there as the “Prime Directive”). Good job, Daniel & Thomas!

The AvH community applauds our junior and senior debate teams who competed in the Quebec Provincial British Parliamentary Debate Championships at Selwyn House.

This was a qualifying tournament for the National Championships, and two exceptional AvH teams qualified to represent our province!

Congratulations to Philippine D. & Annabelle K. who placed fourth in the province in the senior division and to Thomas C.-M. & Daniel L. who placed second in the province in the junior division. Philippine also ranked sixth overall on individual scoring and Daniel ranked as the second highest junior speaker, achieving a personal best score!

Our senior team will attend the national championships (online), Nov. 19-21, 2021, and the juniors will attend Jan. 7-9, 2022. Good luck to both!

On October 1, 2021, AvH hosted the first QSDA debate tournament of the year and the first in-person tournament since 2019! Schools from the Montreal area attended and after three rounds of impromptu debate, our debaters achieved some very impressive results, including:

  • Philippine D.: 3rd place individual speaker award, new personal best score!
  • Annabelle K. & Jade D.: 4th place team
  • Jade D.: New personal best score!
  • Thomas C.-M.: New personal best score!
  • Annabelle K.: Tied personal best score!
  • Daniel L.: Tied personal best score!

The next day it was our Junior team’s turn! They took part in an online tournament for teams from Eastern Canada, competing against teams from Manitoba to the Maritimes, debating the prepared motion: This House would lower the voting age in Canada to 14 as well as two impromptu motions. We also had a strong showing here, especially from Thomas C.-M. & Daniel L. who achieved the second highest score among Quebec teams!

Great stuff, guys!
