Scholarship

The Friends of AvH are delighted to present the Friends of AvH Prize for Values and Excellence. This prestigious award recognizes a student who truly embodies the spirit of AvH’s values, as outlined in our Mission Statement. We are seeking candidates who not only excel academically but are also well-respected by their peers, teachers, school staff, and the broader community. AvH’s Mission Statement, accessible here, elucidates the school’s commitment to nurturing global citizens—individuals who embrace roles as explorers, artists, athletes, worldly citizens, environmentalists, and contributors to their communities.

This scholarship is open to all students in grades 1 through 8, complementing the long-standing Rolf C. Hagen Scholarship, which has been generously awarded to an outstanding student in grades 9 through 12 over the years, thanks to the benevolence of the Hagen Family Foundation.

The recipient of the Friends of AvH Prize will be granted a scholarship valued at up to 50%, to be awarded in the subsequent academic year. Additionally, the top three finalists will be presented with a certificate of recognition.

The multi-stage selection process is delineated as follows:

For any questions please contact: avhfriends@avh.montreal.qc.ca

The voting process is outlined as follows:

Step 1: Students are nominated.

  • In grades 1-4, the elementary teachers convene one week before the issuance of the first report cards and submit names of those students they feel exemplify the values embodied in the prize.
  • In grades 5-8, students can self-nominate or be peer-nominated. The nomination process requires the submission of a short essay (200 words or less) and two supporting signatures—one from peers and another from community leaders (e.g., coaches, community group leaders, employers, church members, etc.).
  • Please submit the nomination forms with the 2 signatures to the office by the deadline in a sealed envelope.
  • The nominations forms (for grades 5-8) are available here.
  • Nominations open from the first day of each academic year until the issuance of the report cards for the first term. During the current school year 2023/24 nominations are possible until Friday, January 26, 2024 until 11:59pm.

Step 2: Nominated students will receive a Values Submission Form to describe how they demonstrate the specified values.

Step 3: The Election Committee evaluates submissions and invites the top 10 candidates to submit personal statements.

Step 4: The top three candidates are invited to a brief interview with the Election Committee.

Step 5: The top three candidates are invited to attend the Abiturfeier (graduation of Grade 12 students – May 31, 2024) where the recipient will be announced.

The Election Committee* consists of:

  • the school principal
  • one teacher from elementary school
  • one teacher from high school
  • one member of the Friends of AvH
  • one member of the Parent Council
  • one member of the SMV (student representatives)
  • Previous year’s recipient (after year 1)

*Each member of the Election Committee will have a back-up member in case their child/sibling is a nominee, and they will need to recuse themselves from the voting.
