AvH is an independent private school incorporated in Canada (“Alexander von Humboldt German International School inc.”), supported by the German Government and overseen by the School Association, which consists of parents and other interested parties.

The Board of Directors is the main governing body of AvH, as mandated by the guidelines for German Schools Abroad. The board consists of seven members of the association, who are elected for two-year terms at the annual meeting each November. The Board of Directors adheres to the bylaws of the corporation and its members are responsible for the facility, personnel, and finances of the school. They work closely with the principal and business manager and act as an interface to the respective German governmental institutions.

Board members are volunteers who provide a service for the benefit of the school. Their service takes the form of time, expertise and financial contributions. Beyond shaping and supporting the overall strategy of AvH, board members engage in ongoing and project-specific committees to further strengthen our school academically, financially and socially.

Membership in the School Association is not mandatory for AvH parents but is highly encouraged. Since November 2017, the bylaws of the association also allow non-German-speaking members to join. However, the business of the board of directors is still mandated to be conducted in German.

The annual School Association membership fee is $20 per year per person.
